 Renowned architect's lower Manhattan residential skyscraper


New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street opened in February 2011. Designed by Frank Gehry, the building is a 76-storey, 271m-high residential tower situated in lower east Manhattan.

According to the architect, the building is the is the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere. It is the eighth tallest tower in New York at present.

The tower's unusual shape has divided opinion. Gehry got the look by changing the design of the bay windows, giving - as the architect himself says, the opportunity to 'step in to space'.

Gehry's tower design has resulted in over 200 unique floor plans. Where the facade undulates, the residential windows also move into the apex of the folds, creating free-form bay windows that are fitted with seating or left open to accommodate dining or reading niches. All interior finishes and fixtures have been selected by Gehry, including cabinets crafted in his signature honey-coloured vertical grain Douglas Fir.

Views from every direction and floor include all five East River bridges and midtown skyscrapers, including the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, Central Park and the George Washington Bridge. To the south and east, Manhattan is seen against the backdrop of the New York Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean.

Frank Gehry is perhaps the most well-known practicing architect in the world today. He has been the recipient of dozens of awards including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989.
